I'm up well before the alarm. We're to be at the thoraic surgeon, Dr. Cohen, at 8:15 this morning to fill out the usual new patient paperwork before our 8:30 appointment. I thought I'd use this time to share a couple of "God things" for those of you who are praying.
One I had already mentioned, and that is that we were fast-tracked into a same-day appointment with the Oncologist. I hadn't mentioned that when we got into his office, there were flyers for a Christian Cancer Care Group that they host in their building every Thursday, and a Bible. Lisa walked over to the Bible, and it opened to Psalm 91, where at the beginning of the chapter a couple of her favorite verses was already highlighted with a handwritten note, "This is for my dear friend Dr. Waples" (the oncologist). It says, "He who dwells in the shlter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust." When Dr. Waples came in, he brought God into the conversation as he discussed how aspects of the human body work.
Yesterday before the PET scan, Lisa asked the nurse, "Do you believe in prayer?" The nurse said, "Yes." "Would you pray for me now?" and the nurse held Lisa's hand and prayed with her, making her more at ease before the procedure. After the procedure, that particular nurse made a point of coming back to see Lisa, and gave her a hug, saying, "I hope everything is going to be all right."
We know that God is in this process. He doesn't give us disease -- it's part of our fallen world -- but He can give us comfort and the strength to get through it. Of course, sometimes He also gives us miracles, and that's what we're praying for.
