We saw a new orthopedic specialist today. With a fresh x-ray, he said that Lisa's bone looks like it did in the x-ray 3 weeks ago, but of course the swelling is much worse, so with the fact the the PET/CT showed no active cancer there, he believes that it's a soft-tissue problem such as possibly clogged (fibrotic) lymph nodes and not caused by the bone damage. He referred us to a general surgeon.
We were able to get in to see the general surgeon the same day. He said he believes that the orthopedic specialist's diagnosis is completely wrong and any soft tissue inflammation and swelling is due to the underlying bone problems.
The *only* thing that both doctors agreed on was that taking a diuretic isn't going to help Lisa's accumulating fluid problem since it's localized.
So now what? We see the regular oncologist tomorrow before the next chemo treatment, but the next referral that's being worked on is with an orthopedic oncologist at either Vanderbilt in Nashville or the UAB in Birmingham. We hope to be able to get that scheduled for later this week.
